LARA KLAUS

Multi-instrumentalist, Lara explores different combinations of percussion, from drums to various instruments with African roots, as well as singing and playing guitar.
Born in Recife, Brazil, Lara Klaus is a percussionist, drummer, singer, composer and educator with a Postgraduate Degree in Music Therapy and a Bachelor’s Degree in Music. She is dedicated to the study and teaching of percussion instruments from the Northeast of Brazil and has played with renowned Brazilian artists, among them Elba Ramalho and Moraes Moreira. She’s been a featured performer at Montreux Jazz Festival and recorded with Bernie Worrell (Parliament-Funkadelic) for the soundtrack of "Prometo Um Dia Deixar Essa Cidade”.
In 2018 Lara co-produced, directed and released her first album, Força do Gesto, with Tomaz Alves, featuring musical collaborations with Zé Manoel, Mavi Pugliesi and André Macambira. In 2021 Klaus released the single Poeira Estelar, featuring her collaboration with Brazilian singer Flaira Ferro. In 2022 her single Rodavida in partnership with guitarist André Galamba came out.
Lara teaches percussion and music workshops internationally and was a recipient of a 2020 OneBeat Accelerator Grant to give online percussion workshops for Brazilian organization, NGO Integrarte, where she had previously served as the musical director of the percussion group Maracaarte. With her solo project she participated, among others, in Festival International Nuits d'Afrique and the Syli d’Or de la Musique du Monde, in Montreal, Canada, winning the ”Public Favorite Award” and ”Coup De Coeur” from the Arts Council of Montreal.
She is also a founding member of , an ensemble formed by four women from different parts of the Americas. Together, they released the albums LADAMA (2017), reaching #1 on Amazon’s and Itunes’ Latin Charts and scoring the song Porro Maracatu on FIFA 19, and OYE MUJER (2020). LADAMA’s 2018 TED talk and 2019 NPR Tiny Desk Concert have been viewed over a combined 300,000 times and their second album premiered at VogueBrasil and featured in NPR AltLatino.
